Splash Page

What is a Splash Page (splashpage) and Why?

Once upon a time a Splash Page (or Splash Screen) was little more than a basic welcome/start page for a website, these days a Splash Page is more likely to be a promotional capture page designed specifically for use on Traffic Exchanges or as an Ad or Banner landing page.

There is, of course, a lot of debate as to what constitutes an ideal splash page (and as to whether or not one be needed at all) but there can be little doubt that ...

'Keep it Short & To-The-Point'

... should be the primary consideration in a splash page's design and execution. It should give a brief summary and overview of the site/product concerned... remember that the average surfer will spend very few seconds assessing a site's potential before deciding whether or not to surf on and leave the target site/product unexplored and un-investigated. A splash page should download almost immediately - if a page takes too long to open most surfers will simply move on.

So - Web masters, keep your splash page engaging or even challenging - make a SPLASH! Entice them in and give your surfers a reason to stay and explore. Provide links to different pages within your target site or sites - make your splash page a convenient portal from which to explore the site or range of products that you are promoting.

I would advise that you always use a splash page on Traffic Exchanges (if you use them). Do not place a webpage that you want to promote in Search Engines (like a site's index or homepage) on a Traffic Exchange - it wont help its Search Engine Optimization or Ranking and will more than likely hinder them significantly. Also, be careful how you monetize your splash page, many ad providers - like Google Adsense - don't like their adverts appearing on Traffic Exchanges - and will pull them... Why? - because they can!

N.B. On the use of Traffic Exchanges: "Most people use Traffic Exchange programs to increase their site visit rate. Traffic Exchange programs offer both the Auto and Manual Surf options with a timing of 3 to 60 seconds. An 'autosurf' program requires no human intervention to rotate the sites in the database, and is used primarily to inflate the total number of site hits. This practice is rather controversial as it may skew the results of website popularity. People's main reason behind joining a Traffic Exchange program is to promote products and services to like minded marketers. A factor which may negatively influence [a website's] ranking is the Bounce Rate. If a website or blog has a high bounce rate then it will be considered that people are not interested in the content. The Bounce Rate is calculated by the average rate a visitor stayed on the site. So whereas the Traffic Exchange sites increase the site visit rate, on the other hand they also increase the bounce rate." -- from wikipedia.org.
