Now don't get me wrong - I LOVE the internet... the good old WWW.
BUT - it IS a jungle out there! Your internet connection opens up the operating system that surrounds it (and ANY data that's stored within that system or a connected network) to constant nefarious attack and theft. You need security and you need it bad - but please don't pay for it... there really is no need. There are so many free options out there that will do as good a job as the paid for variety - and in a lot of cases will do it better.

FREE Anti-Virus Software

avast! Free Antivirus.
An antivirus application is vital for the security of your PC or device. Most new PCs will come with an antivirus application already installed - but these invariably will provide a service that you have to pay for monthly after a free month's usage. DO NOT PAY for these services - you do not need to! There are many FREE equivalents available on the internet - just Google "free antivirus software downloads" and you'll see for your self.

Harbinger451 recommends avast! Free Antivirus - its the one we use here and it has served us well by providing free up-to-the-minute antivirus protection that includes avast!'s basic engine that blocks virus and spyware from your computer and allows remote assistance from a geek friend.
There is a more intensive pay service available called avast! Internet Security that includes secure shopping and banking, sandboxing, firewall and antispam if you require it - but I have to say we just use the free service (in combination with the other free software mentioned below) and it is more than sufficient for our purposes. That said, If you recommend avast! Free Antivirus to friends and relatives and enough of them register you will be able to get the paid service for free too.

The free version of this software is ideal for home users who want spy-ware protection for their own or their family's Windows based PCs and do not need additional antivirus protection (see avast! Free Antivirus above). SpyBot Search and Destroy's free version helps you protect your PC with manual scans of files and by immunizing your browser and hosts file. Remember to manually update before scanning - which should be done (like all your manual security scans) every one or two weeks to keep your PC protected and secure.
