The Horror of it All!

- Horror in Fact & Folklore -

- exploring the origins and history of the wider horror genre -

Here we look at the facts and the folklore behind the many horror tropes, idioms, ideas and scenarios that continue to fuel a plethora of genre Fiction, Film and Games in today's massive multimedia entertainment industry.

Click on the Quick links to the left and right to explore each Sub-genre in Fact and Folklore as they become available.

No one can deny that there is plenty of horror in the 'real' world and that there are many facts that will chill the blood. History is littered with horrors - both real and imagined - but with many of the sub-genres in horror you may at first expect to find lots of folklore and very few facts. The usually oral folklore (often traditional anecdotes, stories, proverbs, riddles and songs) of a culture can often be dismissed as fiction, but they are in-fact a good marker of what that society's beliefs and fears are (or were at a particular time) and can often provide an alternative view of the historical record. You must never forget that what you dismiss as fiction, fantasy or even delusion, many people will believe as absolute fact... and could well have the seeds of truth hidden within.

It is a universal truth that both fear and desire are the over-riding motives that drive us all - and when confronted with the true enormity of everything that is mysterious and hidden, few can overcome their fear of the dark unknown nor conquer their desire to run from it in a blind panic and hide a gibbering wreck behind the sofa.

Fear doesn't just come down to what a person believes or knows is so, fear has more to do with what a person's unconscious suspects MIGHT be so. There's a very hazy area in all our minds that is susceptible to fear of the unknown, of the unexplained or of the unfamiliar - evolution has equipped us with a survival instinct that interprets and 'realises' what it senses as best it can. The unconscious is constantly looking for predators, dangers and warning signs. In our minds-eye we see the things, hear the things and feel the things that MIGHT be there before we have the objective proof of what it is (if anything) that actually IS there. Listening to your instincts is generally a good survival strategy - if something feels wrong, it probably is - but be aware that a person's unconscious mind often fills in the blanks with what it expects or fears the most... just to get them THE FUCK out of there.

Even the most rational of us is susceptible to irrational fear... but it makes the experience no less valid, or horrific, because of that. Folklore should be viewed as a window into the collective unconscious, informed by all our fears and desires - and those of our forebears - in much the same way that nightmares and dreams are windows into our own personal unconscious mind, where our most private fears and desires are kept... deep and dark and hidden.
